And the winning ticket is...
Clinton/Obama 2008

Absent a miracle, which is what it would take for the Republicans to field a candidate that could unite this country, you can count on having Hillary Clinton as your next president and Barack Obama your next vice president.

After all the in-house squabbles are settled and the Democrats face the reality of elections squarely in the face, they will come to their senses and field the absolutely guaranteed winning combination of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

This election will not be about substance.  It will not be about defending this country from any threat other than Republicans.  It will not be about reducing tax burden or improving health care delivery.

This election will be about getting Democrats in the highest office.  For many voters, it will be enough that in one stroke they will put the first woman president and the first black vice president in office.  Commendable as those goals are, in and of themselves, they should not be the substance of any election, but they will be enough to carry many voters to vote for the combination.

Why will it not be Barack Obama for president?  Hillary outranks him.  It's not impossible that she would settle for the number two slot and allow Obama to run for president, but the likelihood has to be just about zero.  The senior politician is not going to step aside from the position she will insist that she has earned to let the upstart ascend to the highest position, the position that she has assumed for years to be rightfully hers.

There is no punch line here.  Look for disastrous tax policies.  Look for continued botched border security.  Democrats will do no better than Republicans on this issue.  Look for humiliation following a premature and clumsy exit from Iraq, and a rising tide of conviction among Islamic extremists that victory is at hand for them.  Expect a coordinated attack in three to six American cities, resulting in thousands of deaths, followed by a sickening wave of public apologies for whatever misdeeds Democrats feel America has committed that "all but" justified these "horrific, but understandable expressions of anger at our imperialist and capitalist exploitations of the Middle East."

It's not that there is no truth to the accusations whatsoever.  It's that whatever the truth of them, nothing justifies the methods being used by these fanatics.  Look for Democrats to ignore the provocations and speak with horror if anyone should sugest going after those responsible.

Unless, of course, it occurs to them to hold the Republicans responsible for the attacks.  Then there would be no stopping them.

Now there is a war that Clinton and Obama could sell.
